We, the undersigned students, teachers, parents and friends of Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School are deeply concerned about the continued existence of 15,000 nuclear weapons in the world and the grave threat they pose to humanity. The landmark Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, adopted at the United Nations in 2017 with the support of 122 governments, offers our best chance of getting rid of these worst weapons of mass destruction. The risk that nuclear weapons will one day be used again, whether deliberately or by accident, appears to be increasing. The consequences would be utterly catastrophic. We face a stark choice: the end of us or the end of nuclear weapons.Australia has joined treaties banning chemical and biological weapons, landmines and cluster munitions. Now we must join the treaty banning nuclear weapons. This is the only sane, responsible course of action. We are disappointed that the current Australian government has chosen not to support this historic international agreement, and we urge you to commit to joining it when your party next forms governments.
