We want our school board and administration to do the hard work of implementing real solutions that actually address the issues of vulnerable students in struggling schools. We want our school board and administration to recognize “redistricting” pulls apart communities, causes real world negative impacts, and most importantly, leaves the underlying problems unsolved.

Petitioning Virginia Department of Education, Fairfax Couty School Board

Stop FCPS from teaching controversial “Critical Race Theory” to k-12 students

The Fairfax County School Board announced in their spring 2021 weekly email digests and website that they are "revising the existing Controversial Issues Policy" in order to develop "a new Anti-Racism, Anti-Bias Education Curriculum Policy."  The current policy and regulation emphasizes the need for teachers to remain impartial on matters of contemporary controversy and preserve an "atmosphere of freedom from bias, prejudice, or coercion" (1). "An issue is controversial when there are substantial differences of opinion about it on the local, national, or international level and when these differences of opinion are accompanied by intense feelings and strong emotions on the part of individuals or groups" (2). The current regulation states "Employees...  shall not attempt to indoctrinate students with personal political and social philosophy" (3).In a Dec. 8, 2020, meeting, the Fairfax County School Board Governance Committee discussed revising its “Controversial Issues Policy,” P3280.3, so that teachers would not have to “remain impartial” but rather “take a clear position on matters that may be perceived as controversial", allowing Critical Race Theory (CRT) to be taught in our schools. On May 6, 2021, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Scott Brabrand shocked local parents and community members by sending out a biased and unscientific sham of a survey infused with the controversial and divisive ideology of critical race theory. There was no place for respondents to say that they reject this scheme, only leading questions. "An update on the draft policy will be presented to the Fairfax County School Board in the summer" (4).We demand: 1. Fairfax County must keep the current Controversial Issues Policy.2. Superintendent Scott Brabrand must throw out the sham “Anti-Racist, Anti-Bias” survey co-written by a New York-based consulting company with a vested interest in the outcome of the survey.  The School Board must direct the development of an independent, legitimate and unbiased survey that seeks authentic parental and community input. Parents and community members should be provided the opportunity to comment on whether topics driven by critical race theory should be embedded in curriculum and the professional development of teachers and staff. The Fairfax County School Board must focus on the academic needs of our children, and be trustworthy in communicating with parents and community members. We must defend our country’s children and their education. Our students deserve high-quality education -- not indoctrination.
