Raise skin cancer awareness within schools
Melanoma is a rising public health concern due to the significant rise in incidence and mortality rates in the UK in the past few decades. A lack of public awareness and information on skin cancer, risk factors and preventative practices thus contribute to the alarming rates and subsequent long term health and well-being implications. MelanomaMe. piloted The Skin cancer Prevention in Families (SPF) 5* Award project in Durham and Sunderland, from February 2018. This project built upon awareness sessions MelanomaMe. have been delivering in workplaces across the North East for the past 18 months. The success of the workplace awareness has been the incentive to target whole families, thus leading to the conception of the SPF 5* Award. Although this particular strand is an extra-curricular project based in Primary schools, the SPF 5* Award scheme intends to educate whole families about skin cancer, protective habits and minimise the associated risks. What made MelanomaMe’s approach innovative and unique is the inclusion of parents and teachers - aswell as a personalised, face to face approach in which MelanomaMe. collaborated with all involved, at every stage of the project, to ensure all information was fully understood, tailored appropriately, counselling and support was available and the criteria was met to obtain the SPF 5* certification. MelanomaMe. would like to progress the 5* Awards across the whole of the Northeast. Our aim is to work with 50,400 children, 1584 school staff, 100,800 wider audience (parents, siblings, friends,) having an overall reach of approximately 253,000 people over the next two years.
