California Ferrets Deserve a Hearing!
Ferrets were banned in California in 1933, mis-classified as a wild animal because all the other members of that family, Mustelidae, are in fact wild. In the 1980s domestic ferrets became increasingly popular as pets. All states except California and Hawaii legalized them without incident or much fuss. California on the other hand continues to ban them. We are currently circulating a ballot initiative which would seek to legalize them, but more importantly for a group of our size, if we achieve one fourth of the signatures required; 91,470 we trigger a legislative hearing on the issue. But even getting one forth of the way there is proving very difficult for our small and underfunded group. We don't have the resources that special interest have. Therefore, we are asking you to schedule a legislative hearing on legalizing domestic ferrets for California without the required number of signatures on our part. Here is a link to the Environmental Report we have commissioned by Sacramento State University. It has been presented to the California Fish and Game Commission multiple times but has never been acknowledged or accepted.
