Petitioning Governor Sandoval

Tell Gov. Sandoval: Use Nevada's VW Fund for Electric School Buses

“My children always take the school bus. Over the last five years or so, I noticed severe changes in my oldest child’s health. When the doctor confirmed that he had asthma, our family’s life changed,” said Angeles Carrillo, a Las Vegas resident and mother of four. “I couldn’t hold a steady job to help pay our household expenses because I had to attend to my child’s doctors’ visits. I couldn’t help him with homework assignments that he missed at school. These are very hard times.” Nevada is set to receive $22 million as part of a settlement after Volkswagen illegally polluted our air for decades. We’re demanding Governor Sandoval use this money to upgrade Nevada’s aging dirty diesel bus fleets to zero-emissions electric school buses, protecting the 181,000 schoolchildren who ride buses, as well as the countless communities they drive through every single day. After Volkswagen was caught cheating federal emissions tests and illegally polluting our air for decades, they are paying states a $14.7 billion settlement, and Nevada is receiving $22 million earmarked specifically to reduce diesel pollution and transition to zero-emissions vehicles, like electric school buses. It’s almost impossible to think of a reason NOT to upgrade our polluting school buses! Zero-emissions electric buses would immediately reduce the toxic pollutants breathed in by family communities and kids every day, save school districts money on the dirty diesel fuel they’re buying right now, create new jobs for local professionals to maintain the buses, and take a step in the right direction to fight climate change. Asthma is the single biggest factor for kids missing school, and dirty diesel school buses are a huge contributor to that fact. We’re knocking on hundreds of doors and talking to people across Nevada to get Governor Sandoval to act, but we need you right now! Tell Governor Sandoval not to waste any time and use the Volkswagen settlement funding for zero-emissions electric school buses!

Tell Gov. Hogan: Use Maryland's VW Funds for Electric School Buses

Tyrese Robinson is a Maryland teacher and a mother. Her daughter would ride the bus to and from school every day. That is until she was diagnosed with asthma and hospitalized three times. When we met Robinson, she told our team, “Our children are literally packed into a box on these school buses where they are exposed to different kinds of harmful emissions which can trigger asthma, bronchitis and different allergies – or worse. I had to take my daughter off school buses.” Maryland is set to receive $71 million as part of a settlement after Volkswagen illegally polluted our air for decades. We’re demanding Governor Hogan use this money to upgrade Maryland’s aging dirty diesel bus fleets to zero-emissions electric school buses, protecting the 623,000 schoolchildren who ride buses, as well as the countless communities they drive through every single day. After Volkswagen was caught cheating federal emissions tests and illegally polluting our air for decades, they are paying states a $14.7 billion settlement, and Maryland is receiving $71 million earmarked specifically to reduce diesel pollution and transition to zero-emissions vehicles, like electric school buses. Petitioning GOVERNOR CUOMO

Tell Gov. Cuomo: Use New York's VW Fund for Electric School Buses

Our children and our communities have a right to breathe clean air. That’s why the League of Conservation Voters’ Chispa program launched the Clean Buses for Healthy Niños campaign. Through Clean Buses for Healthy Niños, we are activating communities across the country, to call on governors and elected officials, to put the health of our children and families first by using their state’s Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust to fund clean, zero-emission school buses. Why the Volkswagen (VW) settlement? Well, VW cheated federal emissions tests and polluted the air we breathe with toxins emitted by diesel vehicles, which increase respiratory illnesses and further the effects of climate change. Now, VW is on the hook to pay a total of $4.7 billion dollars for polluting our air and putting profits over our health. Of that, $2.7 billion will be going to states for projects. We are proposing that these dollars should be re-invested in our communities and school districts. With this money, New York will be able take dirty diesel buses off our roads and replace them with clean, zero-emission buses. This is particularly important for low-income and communities of color where students and families are most at risk of breathing dirty air, and are disproportionately suffering from pollution. We’re demanding Governor Cuomo use the $127 million New York is receiving from the VW settlement to upgrade our aging fleet of toxic diesel school buses to zero-emissions electric buses. This will clean the air in our communities, bolster the fight against climate change, and protect the lungs of the nearly 2 million kids who ride buses every day. Tell Governor Cuomo: Use the VW settlement money to switch New York’s dirty old diesel school buses to zero-emissions electric school buses!

Petitioning Governor Ducey

Tell Gov. Ducey: Use Arizona's VW Funds For Electric School Buses

Herlinda Calderón is an Arizonan mother. Her kids ride buses to school in Phoenix every day. With Arizona’s capital ranked among the most polluted cities in the nation, she knows the dangers of air pollution all too well. When we met Herlinda, she told our team, “Buses shouldn’t run over education with their pollution…investment needs to be made on buses that don’t pollute the environment and the air that our children breathe.” Arizona is set to receive $57 million as part of a settlement after Volkswagen illegally polluted our air for decades. Governor Ducey will be deciding soon what to do with the money. We're demanding he use it to upgrade Arizona’s aging dirty diesel bus fleets to zero-emissions electric school buses, protecting the 300,000 schoolchildren who ride buses, as well as the countless communities they drive through, every single day. It’s almost impossible to think of a reason NOT to upgrade our polluting school buses! Zero-emissions electric buses would immediately reduce the toxic pollutants our family communities and kids breathe in every day, save school districts money on the dirty diesel fuel they’re buying right now, create new jobs for local professionals to maintain the buses, and take a step in the right direction to fight climate change. Asthma is the single biggest factor for kids missing school, and dirty diesel school buses are a huge contributor to that fact. We're expecting an announcement on what Arizona will do with the money at any time, so we need to act fast! We’re knocking on hundreds of doors and talking to people across Arizona to get Governor Ducey to act, but we need you right now. Tell Ducey not to waste any time and use the Volkswagen settlement funding for zero-emissions electric school buses!

Petitioning Secretary Zinke

Tell Trump: Don't threaten our national parks and monuments!

President Trump signed an executive order attempting to eliminate or shrink national parks and monuments that have been protected by our presidents in recent decades. This is an attack on parks and our shared American history and heritage. The Department of the Interior is accepting public comments about the review until July 10, 2017. Sign the petition and tell Trump and Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke to protect our parks.

Speak out to keep the U.S. in the Paris Climate Agreement!!

SPEAK OUT TO KEEP THE US IN THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT!! On December 12, 2015, the world took a giant step forward in the fight against climate change with the Paris Agreement. Nearly 200 countries came together to reduce global warming pollution, fight climate change, and protect our only planet. But with the election of Donald Trump and appointment of climate denier Scott Pruitt as the head of the EPA, all our progress is in jeopardy. To fight global climate change, the United States MUST continue to be a leader and stay in the agreement. Speak out today and tell the Trump Administration they are dead wrong.

Petitioning Congress

Tell Congress to save the EPA

Donald Trump is trying to slash nearly 25% of the EPA’s budget and eliminate 20% of its staff. This is on top of a freeze on new hires, an order to EPA employees not to speak to the press, and climate science denier Scott Pruitt taking over the agency’s leadership. Now, a climate science denying Congressman from Florida is pushing forward a bill “to terminate the Environmental Protection Agency” (H.R. 861). The bill would totally dismantle the agency and threaten bedrock environmental protections which safeguard the air we breathe and the water we drink, and take the U.S. radically in the opposite direction in the fight against climate change. We MUST show Congress that Americans NEED and WANT the EPA! Sign the petition telling your member of Congress to protect the EPA from radical Republican anti-environmentalism in Congress and the White House.

Petitioning U.S. Senate

Don't let the EPA be taken over by polluters!

Tell the Senate to vote NO on Scott Pruitt for EPA Chief Donald Trump’s EPA nominee, Scott Pruitt, has called the risks from climate change “speculative guess work” and said the debate is “far from settled.” Pruitt is a fossil fuel industry favorite, and he can’t be trusted. If he is confirmed, Pruitt could finish what he started while suing the EPA- tearing down the Clean Power Plan, and blocking the Clean Water Rule for good. Sign the petition and tell your senators to listen to the majority of Americans who support climate action and oppose the nomination of Scott Pruitt for EPA Administrator.
