Sharks have been around for more than 400 million years. Presently, sharks are facing extinction due to overfishing and finning. Approximately 100 million sharks are killed worldwide each year. Some species are down to 10 percent of their original numbers. Sharks are vulnerable to overexploitation because most species grow slowly, mature late, and produce a small number of young. IEMANYA is an international organization of scientists, educators and environmentalists committed to protecting marine life, especially sharks and rays, while addressing the socio-economic repercussions of conservation within the communities that depend on marine resources.
