The Humane Society Legislative Fund was formed in 2004 as a separate lobbying affiliate of The Humane Society of the United States. HSLF works to pass animal protection laws at the state and federal levels, to educate the public about animal protection issues, and to support humane candidates for office. Review our Frequently Asked Questions here.

While other animal welfare organizations tackle a vast array of issues in the education, prevention and response of animal cruelty and suffering, there is a recognition that passing critical legislation to protect animals on the federal and state levels must be an important component of the humane movement. HSLF works to ensure that animals have a voice throughout the halls of Congress and with the thousands of federal and state lawmakers in a position to pass legislation to address the suffering and abuse of animals.

Contributions or gifts to the Humane Society Legislative Fund ("HSLF") are not tax deductible. Your donation may be used for lobbying to pass laws to protect animals, as well as for political purposes, such as supporting or opposing candidates. HSLF does not accept contributions from business corporations or labor organizations.

Get political for animals!

You can help put an end to animal cruelty and abuse in this country by getting political for animals. When you support leaders of animal protection legislation you ensure that animals have a voice in the halls of Congress and state legislatures and that important legislation gets the attention it deserves.   Right now there is legislation pending in the halls of Congress that would protect horses from slaughter; make it a federal crime to commit malicious cruelty to an animal anywhere the federal government has jurisdiction, expand domestic violence protections to include pets and provide resources for victims to safely shelter pets from abuse, and much more. But we need you to make these laws a reality. Your voice is critical to the humane movement. Only by passing more humane laws and electing more humane lawmakers will animals receive the protection they deserve. To do this we need to speak out and to vote our values—we need to get political for animals.

Protect domestic violence victims and their pets

No one should have to choose between leaving an abuser and protecting a beloved pet, yet far too many people are forced to make this very choice. The solution is the Pet and Women Safety (PAWS) Act. This legislation would help protect domestic violence victims and their pets in two ways: by setting a national policy that includes protections for pets of domestic violence victims and by establishing a federal grant program to assist in acquiring a safe shelter for pets—so that domestic violence victims and their pets can both get out of dangerous situations and to safety. The PAWS Act recognizes that domestic violence impacts all members of the family—including the four-legged. Tell your senators and representatives that it’s time to pass the PAWS Act NOW.
