Help stop ordinance BL2016-308 from passing 3rd reading!

Councilman DeCosta Hastings has put forward a bill that mandates all developers receiving Barnes Affordable Housing funds to require tenants to sign a "conduct clause." For full ordinance, CLICK HERE This bill is blatantly discriminatory against low-income tenants and further erodes the very few existing protections allowed to tenants. The bill has passed on 2nd reading and is up for a 3rd and final reading on October 18th. Now is the time to act. Please sign the letter below that will be sent to all Metro Council members o Monday. --------------------------------- Members of Council,I would like to express my deep concern regarding the discriminatory nature of CM Hastings’ ordinance BL2016-308. This ordinance blatantly targets low-income tenants by adding three additional “tenant conduct” clauses in rental agreements signed by low-income tenants. The first two clauses in BL2016-308 are unnecessary because they are already accounted for in Tennessee residential lease law. The third and final clause requires that the tenant must, “act, and require other persons on the premises with the tenant's consent, to act in a manner that will not disturb the neighbors' peaceful enjoyment of the premises.” There are already mechanisms in place that allow residents to file a complaint if they are being disturbed by a neighbor. The language in this clause opens the door for low-income tenants to be subjected to targeted intrusions into their private lives. There is absolutely no justification for BL2016-308. This ordinance erodes an already thin barrier of protection for tenants in our city and sets a terrible precedent for future fair housing policy.  As a resident of Nashville I ask that you please vote against this ordinance on Tuesday.
