Petitioning President and Board of Directors of the Gladesville Bowling and Sports Club

Stop the Car Park Save our Bowling Greens

“ Save Gladesville Men’s & Women’s Bowls” Gladesville Bowling & Sports Club With a history of bowls for 63 years the clubs Board of Directors have decided to shut down competition bowls and turn one green into a Carpark and the other into a Beer Garden. Over the past few years Gladesville Bowling and Sporting Club, trading as ‘Sporties’, as per their July 2019 Financial Statement (available on clubs Web Site) has been profitable, with $1,480,000.00 in investments plus Total Equity and Net Assets of $15,882,278.00 including two adjoining properties for which the club collects rent.  During the 80’s and early 90’s through the good times, it was decided by the Board of Directors (mainly bowlers) to purchase two houses, as a means of monetary backup should the club face hard times. There are no longer any bowlers on the Board and the current Board of Directors now intend to change the entire fabric and foundation of the club forever. Over the last 12 years, Gladesville Men’s Bowling Club has had the highest graded and most successful club in the local area.  Gladesville Women’s Bowls is also one of the most successful in the local area including winning state pennant finals. We are well aware that all bowling clubs nationally are experiencing hard times with the loss of bowlers, however as already stated the main club is profitable and in a strong financial position and removing both bowling greens is unjustified. The Gladesville Bowling & Sports Club Board Master Plan: Stage 1 includes: Far Bowling green becomes car parkingGaming will be relocated to where current offices and the bowls lockers are situatedBuilding works is due to commence early 2021, resulting in the far green being removedStage 2 includes: Balance of the greens being converted to a beer garden, alfresco garden, outdoor kitchen The Clubs Memorandum of Association does include the wording “to promote and encourage the game of Bowls”, however the Boards future direction for the club does not include this. The result of the board decision has shocked the bowlers who have depended on the club for recreation and socialising, which is very important for their wellbeing both physically and mentally. Consequences of this decision: Loss of a valuable community sporting facility.Health and wellbeing of seniors is paramount.Loss of a social exercise facility. An important aspect for seniors physical & mental health.Increased traffic flow due to expansion of new car park.Loss of green space.Increased noise. Our community has already lost a great deal of competition bowls facilities including Ryde-X Phoenix, Ryde City, Brush Park, Denistone East & Ryde Eastwood Bowling Club and as such we cannot afford to lose another within the Ryde area.   With some 3,500 members, the views of only the Board will affect the club and community forevermore.  On the 1st of June 2020 the Men’s and Women’s bowls committee received notification that the ceasing of competition bowls will take effect on the 31st December 2020. Then in contradiction, 24 hours after receiving the notification, the Directors circulated a newsletter to all general club members purporting to support bowls stating: Big plans for the future of Sporties: “Over the past few years, the Sporties Directors have been looking at giving more back to the community. Now as well as bowls the club also support ………….” The Committee members of the Men’s and Women’s Bowls would be willing to negotiate with the Board to assist in maintaining the future of competition bowls.
