Support the Reduction of Single-Use Plastics in Barbados
We acknowledge that single-use plastics are among the top non-biodegradable items found in the litter collected in the Future Centre Trust's Annual Clean Up Barbados campaigns. Their removal from the landfill-destined waste stream would make Barbados a more sustainable and beautiful place to live, work and visit. We the undersigned support the implementation of the following measures to reduce single-use plastic consumption and pollution in Barbados: 1) The implementation of a deterrent charge on single-use plastic bags among participating retailers effective no later than August 2017. We look forward to incentives such as reward/ discount programmes and the distribution of free/ discounted reusable bags at retailers to increase their use among consumers while reducing the distribution of single-use plastic bags. The monies collected from this initiative will be donated to registered charities. 2) A ban on polystyrene food containers and other single-use polystyrene products. Compostable, reusable and recyclable alternatives to polystyrene containers are available in the Barbadian market. In addition to being non-biodegradable polystyrene food containers have been shown to have harmful effects on human health. 3) An expansion of the Returnable Containers Act (Cap. 395A 1987) to include ALL beverage containers, including plastic water bottles. Returnable bottles that can be recycled ensure that these items do not end up as loose litter that can potentially block our drainage system and harbour vectors for disease. We encourage all consumers to support the above initiatives by choosing to shop with participating retailers. We also implore the Government of Barbados to facilitate the implementation of the above measures with supporting policy and legislation where necessary.
