EUR coffee providers: We want plant-based milk options!
Currently there are only very few coffee providers on campus that offer plant-based milk. Why should this change? 1 - Sustainability: Opting for plant-based milk over dairy milk in your daily coffee is one simple step towards protecting the environment. The Dutch institute for health and environment listed dairy production as having the greatest environmental impact, after that of meat (1). Why is milk so unsustainable? Dairy products affect the environment in many different ways: they produce large emissions of CO2 and other gases such as Nitric Oxide and Methane, require a lot of water, but also lead to the acidification of land. In comparison, plant based milks, such as oat milk, have a much lower environmental footprint. For instance, CO2 emissions of oat milk are 8 times lower than the one of dairy milk (3). In the Netherlands, most cows are fed with soy, palm kernels or other crops (2). Thus, the production of dairy milk requires a large amount of land and resources, which can all be reduced by opting for plant-based options. 2 - Cultural Diversity and Lactose Intolerance: Did you know, approx. 65% of the human adult population has problems digesting dairy products! In some areas of East Asia this affects more than 90 percent of adults. Lactose intolerance is also very common in people of West African, Arab, Greek, and Italian descent (4). At EUR every 1 in 5 students is from outside of the Netherlands representing 125 different origins. Let us support such diversity by offering more plant based milk options in the coffee machines and providers on campus. All students should be able to enjoy a coffee at our university! 3 - Choice: Finally, some students choose plant-based milk for personal reasons, ranging from taste preferences to ethics or health concerns. We also want to create an alternative for them! Sign this petition to help make a positive change and incite coffee providers on campus to offer a plant-based option at an affordable price!
