We are deeply concerned with the ongoing and alarming levels of prejudice-motivated violence against asylum-seekers, refugees and migrants in South Africa.
We urge you not to overlook the rights guaranteed to refugees and migrants by the South African Constitution and international law and to take action that sends a message that intolerance and prejudice of any kind will not be accepted in South Africa. Your Excellencies, we implore you to take the following action: 1. Publicly condemn, in the strongest possible terms, targeted violence against migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers, including the destruction of their property and livelihood. 2. Take all necessary measures to ensure that the government provides an environment in which every person in South Africa, including non-nationals, can live their lives without fear of discrimination, harassment or violence. 3. Take all appropriate measures to bring those responsible for prejudice-motivated attacks to justice.
