Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition
Policies driving prison expansion ("get tough" sentencing increases, the drug war, and ineffective parole practices/policies) are not effective in long-term reduction of crime and incarceration has been proven to have extremely limited capacity to "rehabilitate" people. The retributive model of criminal justice dehumanizes and disempowers people and communities. The "experts" are in charge and communities, including victims, do not have enough input in the design of criminal justice policy. This can be very counterproductive and does not reflect our values. We believe that given opportunities, resources, and support, people can make change in their lives. It is possible to simultaneously hold people accountable and value their worth.
