Please support and pass legislation that will ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC in 2014. They are inhumane and unsafe.

Please support and pass legislation that will ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC.  Intro 573, which would ban horse-drawn carriages was introduced into the City Council in December 2014.  We ask that you support this bill.  This has been a long time in coming and we finally have a mayor who understands that horses do not belong in the crowded and congested streets of NYC.  It is inhumane and it is dangerous.     Horses work the crowded and congested streets of midtown Manhattan, including Times Square. The slow moving and flimsy carriages are accidents waiting to happen, pulled by sensitive and unpredictable horses.  Weighing between 1,500 and 2,000 pounds, these horses, who are prey animals, can spook in terror at the slightest provocation and bolt into traffic, becoming unwitting weapons. They can kill and injure themselves and unsuspecting pedestrians. In 2010 a French tourist was killed in Salzburg, Austria when a panicked and out of control carriage horse bolted and trampled her.   The same thing can easily happen here.     The horses may legally work up to nine hours a day, seven days a week and do not have any turn out to pasture.  They live in multi storied stables in the far west side of Manhattan away from the public – mostly on upper floors – in stalls that are less than one half the size of what experts recommend.  There is a big turnover of horses in this business – 529 over 7 ½ years. Records of their disposition are not required by the Department of Health and it is thought that many go on to the kill auctions.   This is not the kind of life these majestic animals deserve.  Times are changing.  More and more people around the world are opposed to this practice.   It is time to shut this industry down and for NYC to move into the 21st century with compassion for all beings.    As for the horses, the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries has said they not only have homes for all the horses but there is a waiting list.  If the horses end up at the kill auctions, it will be a spiteful owner who brings them there.
