EPA: Make Gasoline SAFE
The EPA has allowed too many deadly carcinogens to remain in gasoline—and it’s putting everyone at risk. Gasoline is made up of over 500 hydrocarbons and petrochemicals—including benzene. The World Health Organization, EPA, and Center for Disease Control classify benzene as “carcinogenic to humans,” and yet benzene or benzene-ringed compounds make up over 20% of the gasoline sold in the US. Air pollution, and specifically emissions from gasoline, can been linked to 7 of the top 10 most common causes of death in the US, including cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, and Alzheimer’s. It’s been linked to birth defects, chronic illnesses, and premature deaths, as well as conditions such as autism, ADHD, and asthma. The elderly, children, and unborn babies are particularly at risk. This side-effect of gasoline causes everyone’s health insurance premiums to increase. About half of air pollution comes from transportation and burning gasoline. Of the 140 billion gallons of gasoline sold annually in the US, about 30 billion gallons are benzene or benzene-ringed hydrocarbons, which cause ultrafine emissions that enter the bloodstream and cause damage. EPA estimates up to 45% of Americans in urban areas are at risk because they live within 500 yards (5 football fields) from a highway or less than 100 yards of a major road. A study from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) estimates 200,000 premature deaths each year are due to air pollution, and about 50,000 are the result of transportation fuels. Millions more have been and will be born sick and develop costly and debilitating diseases – that you will pay for – if EPA does not improve the standard for gasoline. Congress gave EPA the authority to do more to prevent this high-risk massive exposure to known human carcinogens. Yet still, when presented with numerous chances to curb this public health threat, the EPA has fallen short of doing its job. In April 2019, the EPA had another chance to improve gasoline’s safety by adopting a proposal to include a 98-100 RON higher-octane standard in its proposed “Safer Affordable Fuel-Efficient Vehicles Rule” —called SAFE. They have delayed taking action - again. Signing this petition sends a clear message to the EPA and Congress that we want to curb gasoline’s harmful emissions. We are calling on the EPA to do their job and enforce Section 202(l) of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The Act requires the EPA to fulfill the Congressional intent when it stated “EPA shall reduce mobile air source toxics (MSATs) to the Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) and Technology-Forcing regulatory adjustments as they present themselves. It is possible for EPA to reduce the amount of benzene in all gasoline to at least that of the current federal Reformulated Gasoline program or and studies show aromatics can be cut in half. EPA has the authority to adopt a proposed higher-octane 98-100 RON higher-quality SAFE gasoline standard that requires no taxpayer support, or new legislation. EPA can deregulate the gasoline market and create additional clean fuel supplies and consumer choices. The outcome of a new 98-100 RON high-octane fuel standard will be a SAFE fuel for all Americans. A gasoline standard calling for anything less will cost everyone MORE. More money at the pump, more in taxes, more defense spending to protect oil and more in hospital bills. We are asking EPA for a gasoline that is technologically designed and proven for SAFE vehicles—so they’ll emit SAFE air—to the greatest extent possible. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and the planet to demand the EPA do its job and take significant action. Independent of the health risks, the Department of Energy has shown that clean, renewable fuels are less expensive and lower the price of gasoline because of additional competitive supplies. Tests by automakers show a higher-octane fuel standard results in demonstrable improvement in engine efficiency (i.e., miles per gallon), reduces toxic pollution, and greenhouse gases -- while protecting public health and the economy. We need EPA to do its job and protect public health. Why do we need Help EPA do its job?
