Help protect the AONB countryside around Chiseldon, Wilts for future generations to enjoy
If you care about protecting the countryside for future generations, then please take a few moments to sign our petition. The Chiseldon Community Group aim is to protect the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) from housing development outside of Chiseldon's Settlement Boundary and in the AONB designated landscape. Proposals have been put forward by Swindon Borough Council (SBC) Strategic planning department as part of their Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA) process to build +400 houses on AONB land adjacent to The Ridgeway road and Hodson Road in Chiseldon. AONBs have the same protected status as National Parks and SBC have a duty of regard to protect all protected landscape. Section 82 of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CROW Act) People visit an AONB location for the sense of escapism and a stress-free environment. There are many visitors to our area (local, regional, national) who want to experience and enjoy the wildlife, environment, scenery and sense of freedom. This is of huge importance to the existing community and to a range of different social groups including ramblers, cyclists, wildlife groups, schools and community visits. This area has great historical significance being adjacent to the ancient Ridgeway path which is part of the Ickneild Way which crosses the country from Norfolk to Wiltshire. It is in view from two Iron Age hillforts, Barbury Castle and Liddington Castle, that lie on the Ridgeway Path which is a National Trail. With regard to flora and fauna, the North Wessex Downs AONB offers a rich variety of special habitats for many unusual and rare species. As our local authority, you must make sure that any proposals have regard for the purpose of conserving and enhancing the natural beauty of the North Wessex Downs AONB. We seek your support to reject the proposed allocation of land to be included in the SHELAA and stop exposure to any future development.
