Urge Highways England to respect the safety and needs of people walking and cycling.
We want Highways England to always respect the needs and safety of people walking and cycling when they are building roads. Temporary works must always include ample space for walking and cycling. The designs of roads, roundabouts and junctions must always have safe crossing places for walking and cycling. We want Highways England to stop ignoring its own published guidance manual, which is named 'Cycle traffic and the Strategic Road Network' (Interim Advice Note 195/16), and start abiding by it. Currently, the Highways England A14 project has closed off all safe cycling routes from Impington/Histon into Cambridge, squeezing thousands of people who walk and cycle here regularly onto the last remaining one-metre-wide pavement. In addition, Highways England is building brand new road junctions and roundabouts all along the new A14, too many of which will force people to use deadly walking and cycling crossings of high-speed motor traffic. These deadly-by-design crossings will cause serious injuries to people and that will scare other people away from trying to cross at all. Thus, fewer people will be able to walk or cycle, and more people will be forced to drive to Cambridge. It will cost taxpayers millions of pounds to fix these problems that Highways England are creating, and they will cause injuries, misery and congestion in the meantime. Highways England are ignoring the guidance contained in their own road design manual on the A14 project and the upcoming A428 project. When asked why, the project manager blew off the question and showed that he didn't care about the safety or needs of anyone walking or cycling. This behaviour must stop. Wherever Highways England builds roads they must provide safe, accessible and convenient infrastructure that makes it easy and attractive for people who want to get around by foot or cycle, so that they aren't forced to drive everywhere.
