Born Free USA is a national nonprofit animal protection and wildlife conservation organization. Our mission is to end the suffering of wild animals in captivity, rescue individual animals in need, protect wildlife — including highly endangered species — in their natural habitats, and encourage compassionate conservation globally. We also own and operate the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary, a 186-acre site in Texas where we provide safe haven for more than 600 primates, many of whom were rescued from abusive situations in laboratories, roadside zoos and private possession.

Petitioning U.S. House of Representatives

Tell Congress to Give Primates the Chance at a Lifetime of Humane Care!

There is a glaring oversight in America’s federal legal code – an oversight that has prevented primates around the world from being rescued and receiving humane, lifetime care here in the US. Years ago, Born Free USA received an email about rescuing a baboon from a zoo in Lebanon. We researched the issue and found that under current Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regulations, zoos, universities, and research facilities can import primates into the country – but animal sanctuaries cannot. Because of this, we worked with Representatives Ellmers and DeFazio and Senator Cassidy to introduce the Sanctuary Regulatory Fairness Act (H.R. 3294/S. 1898) in Congress. Please sign this petition to urge Congress to pass the Sanctuary Regulatory Fairness Act and allow certified U.S. sanctuaries to rescue primates from overseas and place them in US-based animal sanctuaries. With current regulations, our sanctuary has been forced to deny requests from citizens around the world who are trying to save primates from abusive situations. For instance, in 2015, a Tanzanian citizen requested that we take a yellow baboon named Chiwawa who was kept as a pet and then confiscated by authorities (you can see her in the picture above). Animals like Chiwawa often face euthanasia if they cannot find a new home at a sanctuary, but our sanctuary had to deny this request and many others. We know how important passing this bill is because of our experience taking in neglected primates at the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary in Texas. The 186-acre sanctuary is home to more than 600 primates, and it could welcome more needy animals from abroad under this proposed regulatory change. If this bill passes, hundreds of primates would be given the opportunity to live out the rest of their lives in a sanctuary — free of harm and abuse. Please sign the petition and help us pass the Sanctuary Regulatory Fairness Act and give abused primates around the world a second chance at a life worth living.
