Protect Pharr Workers From Deadly Secondhand Smoke Exposure!

Every year, approximately 42,000 people die in the U.S. from preventable diseases caused by exposure to secondhand smoke.  Workers in restaurants and bars are significantly less protected from secondhand smoke exposure.  We need your help to urge the Pharr City Commission to pass a comprehensive smoke-free workplace law that will protect the health of all Pharr workers, and make Pharr a healthier place to live and work.   Protect Pharr Workers From Deadly Secondhand Smoke Exposure! With every breath in a restaurant or bar that allows smoking, workers are exposed to 7,000 chemicals that cause heart disease, lung cancer, and other serious illnesses.  In fact, it is estimated that non-smoking employees smoke the equivalent of about 36 cigarettes over the course of an 8-hour work shift. 46 Texas cities, including Edinburg, Harlingen and Brownsville, have comprehensive smoke-free workplace laws in place that protect all of their workers from dangerous exposure to secondhand smoke.  It’s time for the Pharr City Commission to pass a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance that protects all Pharr workers, including those who work in restaurants & bars! Help us move one step closer to a Smoke-Free Pharr by signing this petition!

    Help make Arlington Smoke Free!

We need your help to ensure all workplaces in Arlington are smoke-free, and everyone can earn a paycheck without risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Right now cities across Texas are looking at expanding their smoke-free laws to protect more people, prevent chronic disease, reduce health care costs and save lives. City leaders need to hear from you.  Ask Your City Council Member to Make ALL Workplaces Smoke-Free! Right now Mayor William and the City Council need to hear from citizens about protecting ALL workers, residents, and visitors from secondhand smoke, a leading risk factor for heart disease, stroke and cancer. An eight hour shift at a smoke-filled bar can mean the equivalent of smoking a pack of cigarettes! The good news is that these risks can be prevented through comprehensive smoke-free laws. Currently many traditional businesses are smoke-free, but too many establishments in the hospitality industry, like bars and restaurants, are not. We believe everyone deserves to breathe smoke-free air, and that no one should have to choose between their health and earning a paycheck. Forty-two other Texas cities have created comprehensive smoke-free communities. Will you help us do the same here in Arlington by signing a petition asking city leaders to pass a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance that covers all businesses? Help us move one step closer to Smoke-Free Texas by signing this petition!
