Keep Your Favorite WV Venues Smoke-Free! Raise Your Voice Now!
During the past few WV Legislative Sessions, there have been several attempts to weaken WV's existing smoke-free indoor air regulations. Thankfully, none of those attempts were successful because West Virginians made it abundantly clear they appreciate smoke-free venues and want them to stay that way. Unfortunately, your right to smoke-free air could still be in jeopardy as we expect renewed attempts in the 2017 Session. We need everyone who enjoys working and spending time in smoke-free establishments to raise their voices once again. Sign today in support of smoke-free WV workplaces and public places!
We Have an Opportunity to Reduce WV’s Smoking Rates
Sadly, nearly 20% of WV high school students smoke and nearly 1,800 WV kids under 18 become new daily smokers each year. Additionally, more pregnant women smoke in WV than in any other state in the country. In fact, nearly 1 out of 3 women smoke while pregnant, causing lasting complications for their babies. We have an opportunity to change this! Lawmakers are considering options to increase revenue, and one option is to increase the tax on cigarettes--a proven method of reducing smoking, especially among price-sensitive youth. Urge WV’s Governor to increase the state’s tobacco tax—a health win and a revenue win--before time runs out before the special session! Tobacco tax increases are one of the most effective ways to reduce smoking and other tobacco use – especially among young people and pregnant women. In addition, every state that has significantly increased its cigarette tax has enjoyed substantial increases in revenue, even while reducing smoking. Let's not miss this opportunity to improve health while increasing much-needed revenue. Send your message now urging the Governor to increase the state’s tobacco tax by an additional $1! Thank you!
Say yes to CPR training for Kentucky students!
In as little as 30 minutes, we can teach Kentucky’s students hands-only CPR and how to save a life—what a great return on investment! Senate Bill 33, Kentucky’s CPR in Schools Bill, has passed the Senate and is awaiting action in the House. Please take a moment now to urge your representative to support CPR training for Kentucky’s students. In recent years, 28 states have passed CPR in Schools policies and several others are very close. As a result, more than 1.5 million students across the country will now learn lifesaving CPR each year. With the Senate vote in favor of Senate Bill 33, the bill has moved to the House of Representatives and Kentucky is one step closer to becoming next. Please urge your representative to vote YES on Senate Bill 33, lifesaving CPR in Schools legislation!
