Empower Wisconsin school districts to say no to weapons on school grounds
State lawmakers are discussing the applicability of conceal and carry as it relates to school grounds. Though currently in preliminary stages, this conversation will likely include revising the law to allow weapons inside school buildings, and eliminate a school district’s ability to prohibit weapons on school grounds. This is a topic of great concern in our Whitefish Bay schools and community. More than state-of-the-art facilities, more than state-leading test scores, and more than district ratings and rankings, the safety of our students is paramount. Introducing the option for anyone to carry a weapon inside of school walls is a direct threat to the safety of our students. Advocates for Education of Whitefish Bay requests that the School Board addresses this topic of concern during the 2016-2017 school year. Specifically, we request that the School Board passes a resolution directly stating its position, banning the presence of weapons, specifically firearms, within Whitefish Bay schools by anyone other than designated public safety officers. We believe that the Whitefish Bay School District would benefit from passing such a resolution, as other metro Milwaukee school districts have done, before any law permitting the concealed carry of guns is passed by the State Legislature.
