Acocks Green Needs a Conservation Area!

Acocks Green is a railway suburb of Birmingham.  In the 1850s it had the first suburban station out of Birmingham from Hockley ('The Jewellery Quarter') and Snow Hill Station (The City Centre) Many industrialists and professionals settled here in properties designed to a good standard by local architects.  There were interesting changes in design over the years. We believe that Acocks Green therefore represents an important part of Birmingham history.   Acocks Green Focus Group and Acocks Green History Society have been working on a proposal for a Conservation Area for Acocks Green since 2008.  In 2013, on the basis of the work we had already done,  we were told by Birmingham City Council officers that our proposal was being supported and  led to believe that eventually we would gain a designated and protected Conservation Area. We were devastated this year to discover that our application has been rejected on the basis that our buildings are of insufficient architectural or historic interest.  We the undersigned residents of Acocks Green, and others with a strong interest in Acocks Green, request that Birmingham City Council looks again at its decision to turn down a Conservation Area for Acocks Green.  We feel we have been let down, after the Council actively encouraged us to proceed with the proposal, over many years.  We believe the proposed Acocks Green Conservation Area has significant historic and architectural interest that is worth preserving with a Conservation Area and that the Council has failed to explain why it disagrees.
