The Lights Fest Northern England is due to take place in Buxton on 28th July 2018. The event consists of the release of thousands of sky lanterns into the air, which could have devastating effects on the local livestock, wildlife and countryside.
Buxton lies surrounded by the Peak District National Park, which at the time of writing, is currently still aflame at Saddleworth Moor after over a week of burning - damaging habitats, affecting wildlife through breeding season, throwing smoke and ash into the air and into the homes of nearby residents, pushing fire crews to their limits and requiring the aid of the army.
Allowing this event to go ahead is dangerous and irresponsible, as the risk of starting further fires is extremely high.
We ask the organisers of the event, and the MPs of the areas local to the event and to the already fire-impacted areas to work to get this event cancelled.
