Urge Congress to Protect Students from Bullying

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students have historically been alienated, harassed, and bullied in their schools, often with little or no intervention from school personnel. Far too many of these students have underperformed or dropped out in response to the lack of safety and support. No student should feel scared going to school.

Federal statutory protections address discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex and disability. Unfortunately, federal civil rights laws do not expressly protect students from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Senator Al Franken has introduced the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA), which would prohibit public schools from discriminating against any student on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.

Send a letter to Congress today and let your representatives know you won't stand for bullying in schools. Urge Congress to pass SNDA and protect our nation's LGBT youth.

This is important to me because I love my son. I have watched my amazing and wonderful be tortured physically and emotionally at the hands of bullies for 5+ years. I have had it! Nothing happens to the offenders, but my son will live with anger, anxiety, depression issues for the rest of his life, and he's only 15. I cannot tell you how mad this makes me. But, he's not the only one who has suffered, because bullying affects the entire family of the victim. We need to enact laws to stop this form of torture and torment. No matter what the age of the offender, there needs to be consequence, and to their parents as well if the offender is a minor. We need to send the message that bullying is not acceptable and will no longer be tolerated. I live in a very small community, and in the past 3 years, 5 teens(that I know of) have committed suicide as a direct result of bullying. WHY? This can be avoided if our government would just recognize that our children, our future, is in serious jeopardy. The sooner laws are enacted, the better. It is not OK to abuse another human being, and bullying is a form of abuse and/or torture. Why is this important to you?
