Simon Kenton Council: Reject the Boy Scouts of America's anti-gay policy

We, the Scouting community of central and southern Ohio and northern Kentucky urge the Simon Kenton Council to reject the Boy Scouts of America's anti-gay policy.

Service organizations including the Girl Scouts, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and the 4H Club all welcome gay kids and adult leaders. Also, the American Medical Association has opposed the Boy Scouts' anti-gay policy, saying it could cause "psychological trauma" in youth.

We love the Boy Scouts, but we can’t support this policy. That's why we urge you to speak out and adopt an inclusive policy like other troops, packs, councils, and lodges across the country have done -- so the Boy Scouts can maintain its relevancy, improve recruitment, and truly live by the principles it teaches its members.

NOTE: We encourage everyone to join this campaign, but if you're a current or former Scout or leader, please say so in the "Why People Are Signing" section. Thanks!

Many of my closest friends are gay some of which are boy scouts, and even some that are girl scouts.

I am an Eagle Scout and former Assistant Scout Master. Discrimination is not one of the scout laws or values when I was there.

I'm an Eagle Scout and Pack Committee Chair with two young boys currently in Scouting. My Christian church is "open and affirming" to gays and lesbians, and Scouting's current position discriminates against my church's religious beliefs. BSA should allow individual units to let in openly gay or lesbian members or leaders if those units want to do so, and if those leaders follow the Scout Oath, Scout Law, and Youth Protection guidelines.

As a former member of the Simon Kenton Council (troop 516), I know what can be learned in Scouting. One of the many lessons should be acceptance of people.

I taught high school for 37 years, and still teach at the college level. I watched many young men others SUSPECTED of being gay be ostracized in subtle, countless ways. You contribute to this with your current policy. I had four older brothers, three of whom participated in scouts. The fourth realized that he was gay, and is in an 20-year relationship with his male partner. I adored all my brothers growing up, and today adore the 2 who are still alive, including the brother who is gay. I gave birth to two children: one son, and one daughter. My son realized that he was gay. I adore him. I have signed a petition in support of the lesbian mom whom you denied the right to continue as den mother. You are wrong, wrong, WRONG, to adhere to an exclusionary policy that forbids loving, capable people from leading and sincere, capable young people from participating based on sexual orientation, while fooling yourself into thinking that you are taking the high road. Wake up and take an HONEST look at the realities and reasons for your decision. I hope you do; I pray you do; PLEASE, DO!
