OPPOSE VIRGINIA'S VOTER SUPPRESSION BILLS

The proposed voter suppression bills aim to correct a problem that doesn’t exist. Patrons of the bills claim that they will prevent "voter fraud" in Virginia, yet they haven’t put forward any evidence that voter fraud is actually a problem in our state.

In addition, the law imposes numerous new requirements on local election officials; such as providing and processing provisional ballots and conducting trainings on the new regulations without specifying where funding for these mandates would be attained.

Virginia will face even more budget cuts that will affect jobs and families for the sake of laws that are not needed in the first place. We should be investing in budgets for education, public works, and jobs instead of spending money on more excessive bureaucracy.

None of Virginia's voter PHOTO ID and CITIZENSHIP bills made it through the House. They died in committee. HB 569 got the farthest (it required a photo ID and proof of citizenship to register to vote and a photo ID to vote), but it was offed in a House Appropriations Sub-Committee.

What will cross over next week are: HB 9, HB 63 and SB 1. These bills relate to provisional balloting.

Thanks also to our efforts, the original HB 9 and SB 1 have radically been amended. These are all victories!

While we still need to be vigilant and work against passage of the 3 remaining bills--HB 9, HB 63 and SB 1--the wind is behind us and the people are with us! Thank you for your support and please continue to circulate this petition. Read the latest on the voter legislation and find out how you can help in the following link.

    4. Bills tightening voting ID laws advance, despite outcry

Nearly 300 protestors showed at the rally yesterday against the proposed voter ID legislation. House Bill 9 has passed the preliminary approval vote, which would have citizens without the approved photo ID submit a provisional ballot that does not count . The provisional ballot would ONLY count if the voter's identity can be verified. The actual vote will occur today, and it is likely to pass the House.

A similar bill in the Senate (SB 1) will be advanced to the floor after passing yesterday in the committee on a straight party-line vote 8-7. In the Senate, these voting bills from the House as well as SB 1 will likely be hotly contested as the Senate is evenly split 20-20 between the parties and the lieutenant governor would have the deciding vote if a bill is split 20-20 in a vote.

Explore the validity of the bill proponents' claim that voter fraud is a serious problem that the bill would eliminate. In fact, a five-year study published by the U.S. Justice Department under former President Bush found only 86 cases of voter fraud out of over 300 million ballots cast nationwide.

Pages 6-7 and 12-23 of a report published by the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York Law School go more in-depth into the truth of voter fraud.

I'm very concerned that the Republican party keeps saying it's the party of small government, and then turning around and sponsoring legislation that places burdensome new requirements on individuals and local governments. I'm also concerned that these bills will predominantly affect low income and minority voters. These are bad bills.

If there were evidence of there being a problem with "voter fraud" in our state I might be more willing to consider this bill, but from what I've read this doesn't appear to be an issue in our state.

As a native born Virginian, I am mortified that Virginia and the South have not advanced past the Neanderthal stage when it comes to class and race. This is so reminiscent of the bad old days of the Poll Tax. It is obvious Republicans will do anything to prevent voters who are not in line with their thinking from voting. This has to stop at the governor's desk.

The Republicans can't win on their ideas so they rig the election process. We should be encouraging voters, not inhibiting or banning them.
