Tell Sen. Amy Klobuchar: Stop Delaying, Start Supporting LGBT Bi-National Couples

The Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) is one of the most important pieces of LGBT legislation currently before Congress.  The bill would provide gay and lesbian U.S. citizens and permanent residents the right to sponsor their partners for immigration -- keeping same-sex couples together and ensuring that the children of LGBT parents don't have to worry about having their families broken up by the U.S. government.

Instead of adding her name as a co-sponsor to this important bill, Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar has been dragging her heels and has yet to give her support. Indeed, as this Washington Blade article notes, leading LGBT activists have said they've had "a horrible time" trying to convince Sen. Klobuchar to sign on as a co-sponsor to this bill. This news comes in the wake of reports last year that documented how Sen. Klobuchar, despite a largely progressive record, was disappointing her LGBT constituents for being quiet on some of the leading civil rights issues of our time.

This is unacceptable. It's time to send Sen. Klobuchar a message that LGBT families shouldn't be broken up by the government. Passing UAFA would prevent this. Indeed, Sen. Klobuchar should be honored to have her name added as a co-sponsor to UAFA, and not have to come to the bill kicking and screaming. Let's send her office a message today that on this issue, Sen. Klobuchar needs to show progress now.

I am appalled that this is even an issue. I am a 54 year old heterosexual woman married to the same man for almost 35 years. Get over your fear of not being re-elected and do what is RIGHT and JUST for all citizens.

To all LGBT community we have to start fighting back against these people that are voting on rights we should have in the first place. NC residents we must fight against these politicians that deny us of our rights. Why are they making amendments that will take our civil rights? We have children and families that depend on us. These law will also effect our children. If not for ourselves, fight for our family.

      Honorable Sen. Amy Klobuchar ,

My love and my heart, is far away, overseas. Thank the heavens for Facebook and chat services. We chat everyday and I call as much as I can. It is far easier for me to save for a "Retirement Visa" and move far far away from my country than to bring him here. What can I do? I visit twice a year for as much as my job allows me to go on vacation.

I'm 48 now. I'll have enough money saved to move when I am 51 and stay with him for a couple years only.

Why do I have to leave my country to be with the other half of my heart?

      Michael R. Hernandez
