“The end of democracy and the defeat of the American Revolution will occur when government falls into the hands of lending institutions and moneyed incorporations.”
― Thomas Jefferson
As a United States Citizen, I am deeply troubled by the Supreme Court ruling on Citizen's United that granted corporations First Amendment rights as people, and equated political spending with free speech. The ruling has unleashed unprecedented amounts of undisclosed corporate money into our democracy for the purpose of influencing elections. Ordinary citizens cannot compete with the amount of money being unleashed, and for this reason, this ruling is a disaster for our democracy.
The most unambiguous solution is for a constitutional amendment.
For this reason, I urge you, my Senators and Representative to please co-sponsor the following constitutional amendments.
· Saving American Democracy Amendment is a constitutional amendment introduced on December 8, 2011, by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in the Senate with the companion bill introduced in the House by Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL).
The Saving American Democracy Amendment would overturn Citizen's United Supreme court ruling by declaring that ONLY human beings are people, NOT corporations, and only PEOPLE's right to free speech are protected by the first amendment.
· Please also co-sponsor the constitutional amendment S.J.RES.29 that would overturn Citizens United by granting Congress and the states the authority to regulate the campaign finance system. This amendment was introduced by Sens. Tom Udall (D-NM) and Michael Bennet of (D-CO) on November 1, 2011.
