eBay UK (@ebay_UK): Help #stopbiketheft - make frame numbers mandatory on listings

Ever had your bike stolen? I have. I'm a keen mountain biker and cycle to work several times a week. Over the years I have had two bikes stolen and many of my friends have also lost bikes. If you have also lost a bike you will know the frustration of being a victim to this type of crime.

It has always annoyed me that it is so easy to sell stolen bikes quickly and for a decent amount of money. Being a member of cycling forums I hear about expensive bikes being stolen every week.

That’s why I’ve started this petition calling on eBay and its subsidiaries to make frame numbers mandatory on listings on its site.

Frame numbers are found on every bike and can be used by owners or police to identify stolen bikes. Forcing sellers to list frame numbers on online ads will make it harder for thieves to shift our stolen goods.

eBay goes to considerable effort to protect the intellectual property of music and film companies. It removes auctions for designer items it suspects are illegal copies and requires motorists to enter a registration number when listing a car for sale.

Now we are asking that eBay and its subsidiaries do the same for bikes.

If eBay do this and we all take the responsibility to note our frame numbers and lock our bikes up properly we can start constricting the marketplace for stolen bicycles.

Please sign my petition to show eBay and its subsidiaries that their customers want them to make it mandatory to list a bike's frame number in one of their listings.

Well so far the submission of the petition has not gone well! It was packaged up and sent to eBay's address registered with Companies House but has since returned (rather battered) with a 'address not known' label.
I have since requested an updated address from eBay's press office but am yet to get a reply. I will continue to search for an alternative address but in the meantime will send a copy to their European HQ in Luxembourg.

Hopefully the next update will be far more positive!

    2. Petition ready to go to eBay

The petition is now printed and will be heading to eBay HQ later in the week so 5,547 of you will be asking eBay to make some changes later in the week - hopefully they'll listen!
During this time I will keep the petition open as any increase in support is helpful if we need to pressure them so please continue to spread the word.
On other news, both Bike Shepherd and Bike Register are making favourable noises about backing the petition which is good!

    3. eBay open the dialogue

Thought you might all be interested to know that @eBay_UK have contacted me through Twitter ( @AskeBay ). Apparently they have forwarded the general idea to the policy team and have asked for some more details. Hopefully this is a positive sign!

Whilst the majority of you are UK based, I have noticed a few signatures from overseas, which is nice. However, if you are based in the US you may be interested to know that a US-focused petition has now been setup. If you'd like to sign this one as well you can find it at http://www.change.org/petitions/ebay-com-help-stopbiketheft-make-serial-numbers-mandatory-on-listings

I'll keep you posted on what happens next...

    4. 5,000 say no to bike theft

I can't believe that 5,000 wonderful people have signed up to this petition in such a short space of time! It's great and hopefully this will give us the clout we need to get eBay to make this small change.

Since I am now back from moving house I will finish drafting the covering letter that will accompany the petition with a view to delivering it to eBay at the beginning of next week. This will give me time to arrange all the points you have been sending me regarding implementation of the idea and give you time to encourage more people to sign up. The more the merrier!

Many of you have commented on how this change should be implemented and it clear that this needs the involvement of other agencies so I intend to send an associated communication to a number of other parties to open the dialogue for change. I think this should include bike registers, police forces and large retailers but would be interested on your thoughts - DM me with any ideas.

    6. One for the weekend

Whether you are planning to hit the trails, grind out road miles or install yourself in the pub for the first weekend of 6 Nations action there is one thing I would ask you all to do this week - register your bike on a recognised register!

A lot of us are guilty of thinking "I'll do that later/when I get home" and never do it so make sure you do it this weekend. It will take a few minutes and may help you retrieve your bike if it gets stolen.

Registering is free but you can by additional protections to mark and tag your bike. These range from warning stickers to permanent marks and radio tags that you insert into the frame. Some of the registers also allow you to upload photos of you on your bike to help prove it's yours.

I may do something more about this next week but in the meantime check out www.bikeregister.com www.immobilise.com or www.bikeshepherd.org and get your bike on there!

Enjoy your weekend and spread the word.

I wasn't expecting to be closing in on 200 signatures in under 24 hours so thanks and well done!
I'd like to have at least 1000 (and preferably a lot more) before I take it to eBay as they can ignore a whisper but not a roar. If you'd like to help it along start using the hashtag #stopbiketheft and the shorten URL - http://chn.ge/XmKUBl

Just wanted to say hello and thanks to the first lot of you who have signed up to give eBay a nudge. Hopefully you will be the first of many!
I am beginning to contact well known cyclists, manufacturers and associated groups to widen the support but I am only one man and I work full time. With that in mind I urge you all to pass on the message to friends, family and followers throughout whatever networks you use - every little helps!
