Courage Campaign & Allies in the No on 32 Campaign: Take down your offensive ad

    1. Petición creada por

      Allied Against Stigma

Substance abuse is a serious medical issue. Progressive organizations should not be in the business of furthering stigmatization of marginalized people.

Courage Campaign's mission statement says the organization seeks to "defend and extend human and civil rights secured by law, to end prejudice and discrimination, and to help people work more effectively to address issues that affect their communities to make a positive difference."

But by perpetuating stereotypes about drug users and by stigmatizing people who struggle with substance abuse, this ad (which was ironically released on National Day Without Stigma) contributes to attitudes that allow harmful, punishment-focused drug laws to stay on the books. It needs to be taken down immediately.

I've lost two dear friends, my step-son, and a nephew all to heroin overdoses. The work they each did to stay clean was made far more difficult by the social stigma surrounding addiction. Your ad proliferates that stigma and is in very poor taste. Further, your intended (anti-Koch brothers) purpose has been sidelined by the distracting offensiveness of your ad.

I CANNOT BELIEVE that Courage Campaign would use such an insensitive, cowardly, and stigmatizing ad to promote a campaign! What the hell has gone wrong in your office that you'd take a 180 degree turn away from your mission of pursuing social justice for all? Media like this is EXACTLY the reason people are afraid to ask for help when they've lost control of their drug habit! If you walked into SF General Hospital today with a legitimate medical emergency, chances are you would receive substandard care if there was any mention of illicit drug use in your medical record...and hateful media like this--that perpetuates the idea that drug users deserve any less respect than ANY HUMAN BEING--is the reason for that reality.

You call this satire, but it is not. Satire points out the illegitimacy of stereotypes and this is like the opposite of that. It's not funny at all. I have had a lot of respect for your work in the past, but it is inexcusable that this cruel trash is still up on youtube. You can't possibly have any idea the far-reaching consequences this has had and will have on your membership base. You've just lost any credibility you had earned as a champion of social justice and it's positively laughable you would think that a shill for a cult masquerading as "recovery" program is any kind of redress for the insult you have given anyone who is--or loves--someone struggling with addiction. How many bridges must burn before you accept you made a terrible mistake and apologize? Leave it up at your own peril.

almost all people who live with substance use issues use substances to cope with health and mental health issues. Using hate speech against drug users, like this ad does, is the same as using hate speech toward people living with mental illness.
