Support 21st Century Sex and Relationships Education

    1. Petition by

      Simon Blake

Sex and relationships education in the UK is still not good enough. Schools don’t have the support or tools to help children and young people to develop safe, healthy relationships and research shows young people often leave school vulnerable and ill prepared to navigate their way through relationships.

Being able to make good decisions about relationships and sex is as important to young people’s future wellbeing as any other subject. Young people deserve honest, useful information about modern sex and relationships.

This would include:

• Giving young people an opportunity to speak up about what they need to know and understand.
• Lessons taught by well trained professionals who are confident about the subject.
• Focussing as much on relationships, consent, human sexuality and the emotional side of growing up as on the biology of reproduction.

We call on the government to listen to young people and insist that ALL schools deliver an SRE curriculum fit for the 21st century.

Today, the Guardian wrote about our new research showing that nearly half (47%) of young people in the UK say the sex and relationship education they receive isn't good enough. This research makes it clear as day that schools need to do a better job of giving young people the information they need to make good choices about sex and relationships.

Having worked in the young people’s sexual health sector, I have seen first hand the positive results that come from excellent access to young people friendly education and services; cutting these services back and sub-standard sexual health education are disempowering young people. Brook's petition is giving young people the voice to demand better sex and relationship education from those who are properly trained. I think that is wonderful and empowering and I want to be part of it!

I strongly believe the sex education in Britain is out of date, there is no guidance sexting or the internet at all. it was last updated in 2000, a lot has happened in the past 14 years. Sex and sexual health should not be the taboo subject it is especially when our teen pregnancy rates are so high.

Because SRE in this country is inadequate. As a result it produces and exacerbates issues surrounding gender and social inequality.

This year I want to campaign to improve how we deliver sexual health advice and information. I want to offer young people not just a anatomy lesson of how sex works, but also the emotional and mental side of sexual health. Please Sign this Petition to show parliament that we need more than Sex Education.... We need Sex AND Relationship Education.
