http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2013/09/08/olympic-wrestling-wins-ioc-vote-2020/2781887/ we won!!! Wrestling is in the 2020 & 2024 olympics.

On Tuesday, February 12th, the International Olympic Committee voted by secret ballot to recommend that wrestling be dropped from the Olympics in 2020. Wrestling has been in the Olympics since it's ancient origin and has been included in the modern Olympics since 1896. I see no reason to eliminate it as a sport.

My son wrestled his entire life and I love the sport of wrestling. It is the only sport where it is equal. The wrestlers weigh about the same weight and it is up to them if they win or lose.

Let's tell the IOC that wrestlers and their fans around the world want to see this historic sport stay in the Olympics where it began and belongs today.

Per USA Wrestling

1) FILA, the international wrestling federation, the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Wrestling did not expect this announcement. None of these leadership groups anticipated that wrestling was being considered for this.

2) This is a decision by the International Olympic Committee Executive Board. The recommendation is that wrestling not be included as a core sport at the 2020 Olympic Committee. This is not a final decision. This is not a final decision.

Let's make sure the final Decision is correct.

Clay Durham of East Pennsboro Township started an online petition that quickly caught fire. It garnered more than 25,000 signatures in the first days.

“I fear removing [wrestling] from an Olympic sport will add fuel to the fires of school boards and colleges looking to cut costs,” he said at the time. “With no pro league and world championships not as high profile as the Olympics, it will hurt wrestling tremendously.”

Wrestling Is Restored to the Olympics

BUENOS AIRES - After facing a wide backlash, the International Olympic Committee on Sunday restored wrestling - one of the most traditional and elemental sports - to the Summer Games. Chastened by calls to modernize its leadership and energize its matches, wrestling changed its rules, created more weight classes for women and easily prevailed over squash and a combined bid by baseball and softball.

The EB selected the three sports by secret ballot from a shortlist of eight that also included karate, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu. The vote followed 30-minute presentations by each International Federation and an extensive evaluation by the Olympic Programme Commission to determine their potential added value to the Games.

The full IOC membership will meet for the 125th Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 7 to 10 September and will vote on which of the three sports to add to the programme of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in addition to the 25 core sports – plus golf and rugby sevens* – proposed by the EB in February.

LONDON -- Wrestling's governing body has "reacted well" and made the necessary changes to give the sport a chance of saving its place in the Olympics, IOC President Jacques Rogge said.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Rogge said FILA has dealt with the issues that led the IOC executive board in February to remove wrestling from the list of core sports for the 2020 Games.

"I think they had the good answer and the good reaction," he said. "They obviously were taken a bit by a surprise by the fact they could leave the core group."

Rogge praised the measures approved by FILA at its congress in Moscow last weekend, including rule changes to make matches more compelling and the inclusion of women and athletes in decision-making positions.

Wrestling is now competing with seven other sports for a single spot on the 2020 program. The IOC board meets next week in St. Petersburg, Russia.

    15. Vladimir Putin says removal of Olympic wrestling 'unjustified'

      Clay Durham
      Petition Organiser

Dropping wrestling from the Olympics would not sit well with Vladimir Putin.

The Russian president says it would be "unjustified" to remove traditional sports from the Olympics.

Wrestling is one of Russia's strongest Olympic events, and Russian sports officials have been upset by the IOC executive board's vote last month to drop the sport from the 2020 Games.

A final decision will be made by the IOC in September.

Putin was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying Wednesday "the removal from the Olympic program of traditional forms of sports, which were its basis from the beginning and were in the program of the Olympic Games even in the time of ancient Greece ... is unjustified."

Putin said he hopes Russia will discuss the issue with the IOC.

Wrestling's governing body FILA will meet in Moscow on May 18 to elect a new president and make rules changes.
