Take Nuclear Giveaways Out of the Budget

    1. Petition by

      Greenpeace

Our thoughts are with  the people of Japan as they continue to deal with the aftereffects of yesterday’s earthquake and tsunami. And now those living near the nuclear power plant in Fukushima have been evacuated because of the possibility of a nuclear meltdown.

The simple truth is that no matter how advanced the  technology and how prepared a country might be to deal with a disaster it doesn’t change the fact that nuclear power is inherently dangerous and always will be. But that hasn’t stopped President Obama from putting $36 billion worth of giveaways to the nuclear industry in his latest budget proposal to Congress.

There’s still time to get the money out of the final budget. Tell the President and your members of Congress that there is no place for taxpayer giveaways to the nuclear industry in this year’s budget.

      Dear Senators,

All fancy science aside you are still only boiling water with highly toxic nuclear power. You are gambling that no accident or act of nature will EVER happen.

      BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MATH!

During a hearing in California, in March 2011, they discussed that a possible nuclear accident at Diablo Canyon has been estimated to cost at least $213 BILLION. This sounds low to me considering that 3 Mile Island cost 100 Billion to clean up. That accident was due to the cooling system being accidently shut off for only 2 hours before being discovered and then turned back on.

      THE MATH:

So, lets estimate; 250 Billion is 1/4 th of a TRILLION dollars for one clean up. So only 4 malfunctioning nuclear power plants; after a large earthquake, tsunami, or a geomagnetic storm, would cost about one TRILLION dollars to clean up.

So, if 104 Nuclear Power Plants start to have a partial melt down from the generators and water pumps failing after the MAGNETIC SOLAR STORM predicted by NASA, what are you going to do? Hide? This administration, alone, would be the cause of a NUCLEAR Armageddon. It would be the cause of the destruction of most of America, the certain destruction of the American economy and maybe even the World's economy. TRILLIONS of dollars would have to be spent, for the clean up, about 26 TRILLION dollars to be exact. WE CANNOT AFFORD 26 TRILLION dollars, especially to clean up messes that politicians voted for, just to line their pockets. We cannot afford politicians that can’t think clearly and support outdated ways to boil water. Please don’t let this continue. Nuclear Power is an industry that gambles that no tornado, earthquake, tsunami, or hurricane will ever hit it. TEPCO had no plan in case of an accident, in Japan.

The TEPCO nuclear plants were designed by G.E. - Mark One plants. There are 23 Mark One Nuclear plants in the U.S.A. Interesting, that G.E. pays $0 in Taxes and they get a 3.2 Billion dollar bonus from our government, after a 14 billion dollar profit for 2010. And our government is having trouble figuring out how to spend the tax payer’s money? They’re having trouble cutting the fat from the budget? Really? What could possibly be your motivation to put us all in harms way? Don’t gamble with our lives, or our quality of life.

SOLUTION: Urge our goverment officials to Instead put the 36 Billion, (the funding for Nuclear Power), into SOLAR and WIND . That's why we voted for our leaders, for sensible CLEAN ENERGY, NOT outdated NUKES. CREATE JOBS, not a power elite OLIGARCHY.

      Sincerely, A Sci-Fi Writer, Jaya

I don't want $36 billion in taxpayer giveaways going to the nuclear industry. If they industry is so great let them pay their own way. Same goes for the Oil companies.

Taxpayers cannot afford the cost of nuclear energy! Take that money and spend it on green energy!

It is so easy to look the other way when their drilling for oil or building nuclear plants in someone elses backyard.
