According to numbers recently released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2010, more than 16 million children faced hunger. That’s one in every five children in America!
When children don’t get the healthy food they need, they are less likely to succeed in school – focusing more on their empty stomachs than the lesson at hand. They’re more likely to exhibit behavioral, emotional and academic problems and tend to be more aggressive and anxious.
Kids aren’t hungry because we don’t have enough food. We have plenty of food and effective programs exist to feed hungry children. But barriers like transportation, lack of knowledge about the programs, and stigma are keeping kids from this food. Removing those barriers and connecting kids with nutritious food is what the No Kid Hungry Campaign is all about.
We need your help to tackle this large but solvable problem in our country. Together, we’re going to get more kids enrolled in school breakfast and after school and summer meals programs. And we’re going to teach low-income families how to shop and eat well on a budget.
Get started by taking the No Kid Hungry Pledge today and joining the national movement of people dedicated to ending childhood hunger in the United States.
