From Petition Creator: Kudos and thanks to everyone who spoke out, and especially to Westchester 4 Geese, who helped convince Mamaroneck to amend the contract to hire USDA Wildlife Services - surely these geese would have been slaughtered needlessly if we hadn't spoken out. Hard work and cooperative efforts really can pay off. http://www.lohud.com/article/20130416/NEWS/304160070/Mamaroneck-USDA-approve-no-kill-pact-geese Goosewatch NYC

This petition is in response to Mamaroneck Mayor Norm Rosenblum decision to kill the town's geese this summer.

Canada geese are beautiful, intelligent birds who mate for life, fiercely protect their eggs and young, and display loyalty for other members of their flock. The methods that USDA Wildlife Services uses to kill geese are controversial and widely understood to be grossly inhumane - during the hottest months of the year flightless geese and goslings are corralled, packed into turkey crates and transported to slaughterhouses or gas chambers.

There is no scientific basis that geese dropping pose a threat to human health. Killing the geese is counter to public opinion, not how the residents of Mamaroneck want tax dollars spent, and a horrid example for children to whom we teach tolerance and co-existence with wildlife.

Killing the geese is not an effective solution, and will only clear the area temporarily as other geese will repopulate the vacant desirable habitat. A long term strategy is required to resolve the conflict.

This unfortunate plan can be avoided by making a commitment of simple steps, such as cleaning up the grass with machines that pick up goose droppings, and making landscape modifications which hamper access to the pond and prevent geese from colonizing the pond’s surrounding area. Migratory geese will leave the area on their own in the spring, local populations that remain through the summer can effectively be controlled.

Mamaroneck Village has withdrawn authorization to kill the geese and will not allow any geese to be killed under our contract with the USDA. See: http://www.village.mamaroneck.ny.us/Pages/MamaroneckNY_Press/Goose%20Management%20%20Mamaron...

This is horrible!!! Why would anyone do this? These animals don't deserve to die just because they are an inconvenience. That would be like murdering all of the people in the town because its overpopulated.....please do not move forward with this cruel plan.

BECAUSE THEY ARE LIVING CREATURES WHO ARE DOING WHAT THEY WERE CREATED TO DO BY GOD. WE DO NOT OWN THE LANDS. THE ANIMALS DO AND THIS IS AN IGNORANT SELF-RIGHTEOUS DISGUSTING THING THAT THEY ARE PROPOSING. AND THEY ARE A SAD EXCUSE FOR A LIVING CREATURE

Killing is not the answer - more geese will come back next year. Better to find a way to peacefully co-exist - after all, geese are God's children too.

Killing geese is NOT the answer! There are ways to remove the geese or coexist with them without these disgusting practises.

This is inhumane and a gross act of cruelty. Wildlife share our earth and we ought to learn to live with them. They enhance our lives with their beauty. Surely, we can figure out how to coexist without exterminating them. I am informing the restaurants and bakery, tailor and boutique in Mamaroneck that I have frequented over the years that I will no longer unless this killing geese is called off.
