On 19th January 2013, Kashmiri Pandits will enter their 24th year in exile. Since 1990, Kashmiri Pandits are living as refugees in their own country. Exactly 23 years ago, around four to five lakh Kashmiri Pandits were forced to leave the valley. Prominent Kashmiri Pandits were killed in a span of few months and by 1992, only a few thousand Kashmiri Pandits were left in the valley.
In these 23 years of exile, the culprits responsible for the killing and exodus of Kashmiri Pandits haven't been brought to book. In addition, in spite of a law passed in the Jammu and Kashmir state assembly, several complaints are pending in the J&K courts related to encroachment of Pandit properties. Moreover, time and again, Kashmiri Pandits have complained against the selective removal of their names from electoral lists. Political system, both at state and centre, irrespective of party levels continues to pay no heed to the repetitive demand of Kashmiri Pandits on the above issues.
We demand the following actions be taken by Government of India/J&K State Government:
1. Judicial enquiry into the exodus and killings of Kashmiri Pandits
2. Open all cases against culprits who are responsible for the exodus and killings of Kashmiri Pandits
3. White paper on encroachment of Pandit properties and desecration of temples
4. Removal of irregularities in Kashmiri Pandit electoral voter lists
We hope that we will see some steps in this direction.
