Stop Hotlinking Copyrighted Images of Web Publishers

    1. Petition by

      Mahesh Gupta

      India

On January 25, 2013, Google Image Search Engine introduced a new format for showing image search results to online users. This format shows full resolution images on Google's Image Network.

Why it is bad for users ?
1. Users have to click more to get to the final image.
2. Users can not search for similar images.
3. Users do not get correct image descriptions.
4. It will be difficult for users to find the images they are looking for.
5. The new system only wastes more time of users and bandwidth as well.
6. The new system will result in many web publishers removing their images from Google and result in less number of results for users to choose from.

Why this is bad for web publishers?
1. This change leads to theft of images, which are copyright of websites hosting the images.
2. The web publishers do not get any traffic. This has been reported on various websites and forums, including Google Image Search forums.
3. Google is violating copyright of numerous photographers and web publishers, who spend countless hours on producing high quality images.
4. Most web publishers have reported huge loss of revenue for the past two weeks, starting 25 January 2013.
5. Web publishers should get together and file class action lawsuit in US and also file cases in other countries.
6. Google is trying to keep all the traffic on its own website, thereby cheating web publishers.

At the moment, Google Images is stealing images of webmasters.

Google has turned a deaf ear towards web publishers. And, Google is not caring that they are stealing copyrighted work of almost all the websites which are operating online.

Getting in touch with media houses to raise awareness about the issue.

Google has completely ignored the rights of Web Publishers. And on Google Images Forum, Google employees have rudely ignored the fact that every web publisher and image search user is not liking this change.

I would suggest everyone to read the following articles, which will give us confidence that we would win this issue.

Google cuts copyright deal with French publishers | PCWorld

Google has created a €60 million (US$81 million) fund designed to settle disputes with French publishers over lost revenues, providing an alternative to a proposed "link tax" that would have charged the company for posting French news content in its search results.
