Victory

When my wife and I learned that we could afford a home, we thought it was too good to be true. It turned out that it was.

Within weeks of moving in, my wife, my two year old son, and I all started experiencing terrible dry-mouth and mouth sores.  Then we started to have trouble breathing, and I developed sinus headaches and nosebleeds.  It was so hard watching my son scream in pain when he tried to eat or even drink water. That's when we learned why we were getting sick: our new home used to be a meth lab.

My home was contaminated with methamphetamine. But even worse, it was filled with traces of the toxic stew used to cook the drug. In a sense, my family got off easy - we learned why we were getting sick early on. Other families spend years unaware that their homes are making them sicker. Children my son's age sometimes develop lifelong illnesses and developmental disabilities as a result of their exposure to these chemicals.

Freddie Mac advertises“Our qualifying homes come with a reviewed title, and a repaired living space making them easier to sell and improving home values in your territory. We sell our homes responsibly. Freddie Mac is committed to having the best property maintenance and sales standards in the country.” We had no reason to expect otherwise. Instead, they irresponsibly sold us a ticking time bomb of dangerous chemicals without even telling us. Meanwhile, we've had to make our mortgage payments in addition to renting a new home and replacing all of our personal items that became contaminated from being in the house.

Freddie Mac won't take any responsibility for misleading us about the safety of our home, and attorneys just tell us that we should've read the fine print. Tell that to my son. Simply walking away will not only negatively impact our credit, but would enable banks to continue this trend of severe negligence.

My family is drowning, and we need your help. Please sign my petition demanding that Freddie Mac cover the cost of decontaminating our home, in addition to covering our housing costs and cost of replacing our furniture and other household items. Most importantly, we want Freddie Mac to start regularly testing the homes it sells for meth contamination, just like it would for lead paint. Even more than our own woes, we are deeply concerned that this could happen to you.

We realize WHOLEHEARTEDLY that we could not have reached this resolution without the overwhelming support of YOU - our supporters through change.org. We also want to thank the media outlets who have shared our story in efforts to prevent the same nightmare from happening to others.

Finally, we also want to extend a special "Thank You" to IKEA for the gift of replenishing our furniture we lost to contamination. Each day we are reminded of how blessed we have been by your generosity. Your amazing gift has done more than replace our creature comforts, but serve share a story of what we have walked through and the joy that sprung forth through overwhelming circumstances. Words cannot express how grateful we are.

After our petition received so much support and national attention, we finally spoke directly to Freddie Mac about our concerns, and were able to work out a mutually satisfying resolution. We want to thank Freddie Mac for working with us in good faith to resolve our situation.

Beth and I also want to thank everyone who reached out to us for their support and concern and to reassure them that we will remain tireless advocates for educating families in the housing market about the potential hazards of methamphetamine contamination.

We are also excited about Freddie Mac's commitment to " ...to review and update our policies to protect our buyers and their confidence in HomeSteps homes."

I just heard from a friend today who, in the process of buying a home in Southern California, mentioned our situation to his broker. The broker, surprised that he knew us and is from our community, explained that she was very well aware of our case due to the media coverage and more discussions among real estate professionals throughout the west coast. Such conversations have led her to believe that our family's case is at the "tipping point" of new legislation which could come into place as a result of what our family has been walking through. We are encouraged that our situation is causing a stir among professionals who recognize the need for better regulations and education for home buyers. Once again, our hope is that no more families have to face what we have.

Beth, Ezra and I are so thankful to all of those who have supported us through this horrific experience. Even though the "light" at the end of this tunnel is faint and uncertain of the outcome, we find great strength and comfort in knowing that so many of you are standing with us. This Thanksgiving season, we are overwhelmed and thankful for YOU. @jonathanhankins

After over three months, we FINALLY received a response to our request for a simple meeting. Friday, November 9th, Beth and I shared a conference call with Eric Will, REO Director for Freddie Mac. Although no offers or specific agreements were made, we were finally able to share with them our experiences and our requests. They committed to getting back to us early next week. #progress

Thanks to some amazing members of our community, the Southern Oregon Meth Project will be receiving donations for the mitigation of former meth homes, and offsetting some of our major expenses.

If you are interested in helping to cleanup the "Aftermeth" effects on our neighborhoods and community, click on this link: www.somp.org

We are also partnering up on efforts to raise a greater awareness on how meth not only effects the individuals, but an entire community.

'We Bought A Meth Lab ... By Accident'

If the price being offered for that dream home seems a steal, better make sure no one was committing crimes there. That's the painful lesson that Jonathan and Beth Hankins learned after buying a foreclosed fixer-upper in Klamath Falls, Ore., for the rock bottom price of $36,000.

    17. Portland, OR Senator Responds to Request for Revision of Disclosure Law

      jonathan hankins
      Petition Organiser

A constituent in NE Portland, Oregon receives a letter from Senator Shields' Office in response to this petition. If you are interested in bringing this issue to your local representative's attention, please do so! If you are in the NE Portland district 22 and would like to meet with Senator Shields about this matter, contact 503-231-2564. Appointments fill up fast! We have also heard news of Senator Bates of Medford, Oregon taking interest in this issue. Although we might be behind the ball of getting a disclosure reform on the ballot for 2013 by September 17th (in Oregon), it couldn't hurt to contact your Senators and district representatives to start making some noise. The future health of our communities remains at risk as more and more repossessed homes come on the market and the banks weasel out of existing disclosure laws. Let's hold banks accountable to the same disclosure laws that we are held to. Requiring meth testing for repossessed homes should become required.

This could happen to anyone and needs to be regulated. Like a certificate of clean homes where they conduct tests to make sure that things like this doesn't happen to anyone.

Every one knows the dangers of these homes that have had chemicals cooked in them. It should be against the law to sell a home to a family that has been a meth lab.Finance Company should let them have another home and buy new furnishings for new home.

This a god damn shame. After all of the tax p[ayer money this organization has received, they are adding insult to injury by selling homes that are literally poisonous. Shame on Freddiemac.

I'm looking at properties and just visited one that was likely a squatter's camp for meth heads. Apparently the real estate agent is NOT informing potential buyers of this history
