Dear Mr. Manmohan Singh,
It immensely pains me, as an average citizen, to read and hear about so many rape cases happening at such alarming rate across the country. Whether it’s the gang rape of the medical student at Delhi, or the sexual harassment of the girl in Guwahati, or the young girls who were abused by bunch of goons, it just goes on to show that our mothers and sisters no longer enjoy a safe environment, as promised by the constitution of India.
The media does its job of reporting these incidents wherever possible; the citizens, such as me, get involved and lend our support in whatever capacity, but that’s only as much as we can do. The media can’t provide justice, or as citizens, we are limited in our power. Sir, you and other elected representatives, on the contrary, have the power and more importantly the responsibility to deal and put mechanisms that prevent such things from happening.
Statistics point out that there are 635 rape cases registered in Delhi alone, in 2012, and not one person has been punished till date. This is a major area of concern.
It is our humble request to you, to set up fast track courts, specifically to deal in rape and harassment cases against women, not just in Delhi, but across India.
