Create a Generation of Lifesavers

    1. Sponsored by

      American Heart Association Arizona

The American Heart Association is creating a generation of lifesavers by making sure students learn CPR before they graduate. This essential life skill will benefit countless families by increasing the number of Arizonans with CPR proficiency.

Rafael Rendon of Ajo, AZ is alive today because of CPR:

The day I went in to sudden cardiac arrest, I didn’t look good and I felt very tired. I knew that I had football practice that evening so I just continued with school and went to practice. The coaches had us run laps around the field because one of the players threw trash on the ground. After the first lap I started to feel really bad and slowed down. Then I collapsed. Two weeks later, I woke up after surgery. All I know about what happened is what my parents, friends and relatives told me.

When Rafael fell on the field, a volunteer paramedic on the sidelines rushed over and immediately began hard, fast chest compressions. Rafael’s heartbeat came back and he was flown to a Phoenix hospital where he received treatment for a congenital heart defect that had not been detected before.

Many people like Rafael are alive today because individuals trained in CPR – including youth and adults who received that training in school – stepped in and gave CPR until EMTs arrived. Tell your lawmakers we need to create a generation in which every teammate, friend, brother, sister, son, daughter, and complete stranger is trained in CPR and is prepared to save lives.
