Stop developmentally inappropriate policy-making in the early years

Stop developmentally inappropriate policy-making in the early years

    1. Petition by

      Save Childhood Movement

Ministers in England persist in seeing the early years as a preparation for school rather than a vitally important stage in its own right. This period of life is when children establish the values and relationships that underpin their sense of self, their attitude to later learning, and their communicative skills and natural creativity. Inappropriate pressures and interventions at this stage can cause profound damage to the self-image and learning dispositions of the child and we support the Save Childhood Movement's Campaign objectives to:

1) re-establish the early years as a unique stage in its own right and not merely a preparation for school
2) protect young children's natural developmental rights
3) prevent baseline testing
4) reinstate the vital role of play
5) call for an English developmentally appropriate Foundation Stage for children between the ages of 3 and 7 (until the end of Key Stage 1)

    2. 30th OCTOBER DAY OF ACTION

      Dear petition signatories,

We are now preparing for the Day of Action on the 30th of October where we will all meet to march past parliament and are then holding a parliamentary lobby to present the petition along with all the other evidence supporting our case. You can help by lobbying your own MPS (you will find a sample letter on our website), by letting other people know about the campaign and by joining us on the day.

This really is all about people power and how we want to lift the debate above party politics to what is truly in the best interests of the child.

We hope that you will want to stay with us on this journey

This Tory government does not care about people, particularly children. It seems to me that Gove has an instrumental view of humans and their nature- humanicus economicus. Everything about childhood is seen as a preparation for economic life. This is totally in line with the view of the rule of markets and the marketisation and the privatisation of everything including human beings. It is a view driven by a poverty of vision of human nature and society. I never thought I would be alive to see such a government pursue such policies with the agreement of much of the population of the UK. It makes me both ashamed and mad!

children need to have the freedom to develop at their own pace. If we continue to force our children to do things before they are developmentally ready we will have a country of closed down, unmotivated teenagers. This has to stop now!

Would you give a 50 year old a zimmer frrame so that they were old age ready?
