Clean energy history is on the horizon. After 30 years in existence, the ethanol tariff and subsidies are set to expire on December 31st. The subsidy hands out $6 billion in taxpayer dollars to the Big Oil companies that blend ethanol with gasoline – while the tariff blocks access to much cleaner, more affordable options like sugarcane ethanol from Brazil.
It’s a terrible deal for pretty much everyone, but it won’t be over without a fight. The corn ethanol lobby is scrambling to push through a renewal of these costly policies under-the-radar during the lame-duck session – and you can help stop them from sealing any last minute deals.
Only a few days remain on the Congressional calendar, so the window to extend these senseless policies is closing – let’s shut it for good, right now. With your action, we’ll make history by letting the tariff and subsidies expire for the first time ever.
More than ever we need a level playing field for energy alternatives to help end our dependence on fossil fuels. Corn-based ethanol can stand on its own. It’s time to eliminate the handouts and diversify America’s energy sources.
