The Walt Disney Company: Stop the licensing of insulting, racist Tonto products

The Halloween costume market has begun. Costume elements based on the ridiculous Tonto character in the recent Disney film, have begun to appear on websites such as this one: http://www.partycity.com/product/deluxe+tonto+raven+headband.do?producttargetid=538235&gclid=CLG2yKDDkrkCFSJqMgod7hcAhw.

These products perpetuate racist stereotypes of Native Americans. We are not a Halloween Costume! Disney's loss on the terrible Lone Ranger film should not be made up by licensing products insulting to native people.

A lovely analysis of the racism we are fighting, from Alex Yarde of The Good Man Project. Full article (well worth the read!) is here: http://goodmenproject.com/arts/hesaid-why-does-tonto-have-that-bird-on-his-head-racism-in-the-new-lone-ranger/

"Historically, white males, being both the main audience these shows were written for and produced by, were not all that concerned how other groups were portrayed. Programs like Amos & Andy and Charlie Chan were just as culturally insensitive. I hope that these would not be tolerated today. Would they? If not, then why, in 2013, is it still okay to portray Native Americans in this demeaning way?"

Why Does Tonto Have That Bird On His Head? Racism in the New 'Lone Ranger'

Alex Yarde discusses the blatant racism in the new Disney film, "The Lone Ranger". In 1890, at Wounded Knee, on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, U.S. soldiers opened fire on unarmed Native Americans being held captive. At least 150 Lakota were killed including many women and children.

Would you let your kid dress up as an "Asian" or a "Black" for Halloween? http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2013/06/05/disney-store-offers-tonto-halloween-costume-149727
