We want an immediate end to all advertising aimed at children under 11.
  • Petitioned The UK Government

This petition was delivered to:

The UK Government

We want an immediate end to all advertising aimed at children under 11.

    1. Petition by

      Leave Our Kids Alone

We believe children should be free to develop at their own pace, to learn to navigate the adult world and achieve an understanding of their own worth free from undue commercial pressure.
A growing body of evidence is linking our increasingly materialistic consumer society to problems with low self esteem, depression and other mental health issues among young people. The more difficult a child's family and economic circumstances the more vulnerable it appears they are to the worst psychological effects of advertising.
Advertisers should target parents and not young children.

The UK Government
We want an immediate end to all advertising aimed at children under 11.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

    2. Labour Could Ban Adverts Targeted At Kids, Says Jon Cruddas

We're starting to have a real impact. Not only is the Green Party likely to consider adopting an ad ban as policy at its autumn conference but Jon Cruddas has started the debate within the Labour Party.

Meanwhile we are meeting with other campaigning groups opposed to the commercialisation of childhood, in London on Thursday. Things are hotting up. Please continue to share the petition with your friends.
      Many thanks

Labour Could Ban Adverts Targeted At Kids, Says Cruddas

Labour will examine a Swedish-style ban on adverts targeted at youngsters as part of efforts to tackle the commercialisation of childhood, the party's policy review chief Jon Cruddas said. The party will also consider ways to help parents stop children from accessing online pornography and other inappropriate websites.

I can see the influence on my children although we regularly discuss the distortion of facts in advertising.

I have seen a change in the behaviours of my daughter since watching commercial children's daytime television. She is confused as to why she cannot have everything that she sees on television and her manners have changed to 'can I have', as opposed to her Please and Thank You's. As much as this is a developmental part of growing up and learning, I feel that this has been exacerbated by the surge of advertising thrown at her every time we watch morning television and her growing frustration that she can't have everything that is put in front of her eyes on the TV.

Because it's wrong to target 11 year olds with consumerist bullshit.

Childhood is such a brief and fleeting part of our lives, and so prescious. But it seems under attack from every angle!
