Stop the Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA)

    1. Petition by

      Connor Dexter

This petition is to stop the Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).

The existence of ACTA would make:
* ISPs have to proactively police copyright on user-contributed material. *
Meaning sites like Youtube or Flickr would have to look through every piece of material uploaded in order to make sure that none violate copyright law. This would cause these sites to become impossible to run, as the amount of content being uploaded would take too much money to moniter.

* That ISPs have to cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability.*
This means that your entire family can lose internet if one person infringes copyright law. There does not need to be a trial or investigation, it is just shut off for everyone.

* That the whole world must adopt US-style "notice-and-takedown" rules that require ISPs to remove any material that is accused*
Meaning by simply accusing something of copyright infringement, something can be taken down without evidence or trial, it would create an incredibly easy way to censor the internet and those on it.

ACTA is a danger to the freedom of the internet, and we hope with this petition we can help to keep the internet free.

This isn't the way they should be combating piracy. -_- There going to have to think twice before silencing the citizens of the internet. If this thing gets any closer to coming through we'll hit them twice as hard as we did last time.

Politicians must begin to pay heed to what their public want. Agreements in the interests of the public do not require stealth and secrecy to create!

As an English teacher, I am against censorship of anyone's thoughts, even if those thoughts have to be filtered through someone else's ideas first. I am also in favor of making sure that copyright is protected -- but this act goes too far. It denies American citizens of any kind of trial, appeal, or fair judgement -- an accusation is as good as a conviction. The last two times America did that are now known as the Salem Witch Trials and the McCarthy Era. DO NOT allow those eras of censorship, hate, and guilty-until-proven-innocent (except you don't have a chance to prove anything...) to rise again!
