The British Government: No public money should be spent on the funeral of Margaret Thatcher.

      edinburgh, United Kingdom

In this time of austerity, it is an affront to the ordinary people of Britain, that any public money whatsoever be spent honouring someone who caused millions to live in misery and poverty. No public money should be spent on the funeral of Margaret Thatcher. The entire cost of her funeral should be recovered from her estate. Any public money already identified for her funeral expenses should instead be spent creating employment in areas still left devastated by her regime.

It's not about disrespecting the dead, it's about not wasting public money on something that is frankly an insult to the British public. Thatcher's family have every right to the funeral they wish to pay for out of their money, but we don't want a penny of our money spent on honouring her.

Philip Hammond, Secretary of State for Defence
Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health

Well, so far, there has been no direct response from the government. Sadly, therefore, I have little news other than this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-22299372
I'm not sure if the costing given here is inclusive of everything the state paid for that day, but judging by the amount of pomp and ceremony surrounding the funeral, I doubt it. Does this costing include the cost of all those soldiers marching in the procession, and standing in the guard of honour, or did that come out of a military budget? Does this costing include the cost of all the gun charges fired in salute, and the soldiers attending the guns, or was that a military budget too? Does this costing include the cost bodyguards and personal protection for Royalty and foreign dignitaries, or did that come out of some other budget? were there hidden costs? Write to David Cameron, and write to your MP, and ask.

Check back on previous PMs funerals and with the exception of Churchill they all have fairly normal affairs followed by a remembrance service. Have no idea why Mrs Thatcher's shouldn't have been the same. After the damaging cuts that the government have made this is a slap in the face for the people of this country for a woman who is more divisive than anyone before. Totally wrong and totally uncalled for.

It's important because to get the public to pay for this is extremely insulting to everyone who lived through the 'Thatcher ' years and everyone who is still picking up their lives as a result of where her policies have left this countries industry. Apart from the fact that her estate can afford this without even blinking, the British taxpayer is endlessly footing the bill for things WE don't agree with or aren't even consulted about.

Because it's what she would have wanted - Turn it over to open bidding, lowest bid gets it, and if she winds up in ASDA corned beef by mistake then that's all she deserves.

1000 signatures in the last hour or so! Keep going people! If every person who's signed now gets twenty-five more people to sign, and THEY do the same, that will be over one and a half a million signatures. if those people also did the same, that would be nearly forty million! can we get it that high in a few days?

Express your disgust at this unnecessary cost to the public purse, and sign! .
