Tell U.S. Congress: Protect Refugees

    1. Sponsored by

      International Rescue Committee

As conflicts rage around the world, people must often flee their homes in an instant, taking only what they can carry. Under threat of violence and persecution, they will walk great distances on foot, sometimes crossing international borders to keep their families safe. For some refugees, returning to their homes is not an option.

As a symbol of hope and promise for all people, the United States must do more to ensure that refugees and asylum seekers can find safety and protection within its borders.

Lawmakers acknowledge that since formally committing to protect vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers 60 years ago, U.S. law has fallen short of its obligations.

Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont says, “There is no question that the United States is a leader among nations in refugee protection, but we can do better.”

Tell your Members of Congress that refugees enrich American societies and communities. Tell them that refugees deserve the chance to safely rebuild their lives in the United States. Refugees who put down roots on American soil can become productive members of their communities.

Many of America’s brightest innovators and leaders came to the United States as refugees. Today, prominent Americans who are former refugees include U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Intel co-founder Andy Grove.

It's on the United Nations' chart all the individuals have the right to an identity, to a home, to a properly education and to health. The condition of refugee or asylum seeker is the poor condition that anybody don't want.

The U.S. refused to take the men, women, and children of the Holocaust in the 30's and 40's and instead let 9 million die. Stand up and do the right thing today.

You need to include Christians and gay and lesbians as persons needing protection as refugees!
