Wild horses and burros are supposed to be protected by federal law, but out west, the animals compete with ranchers for grazing land and are routinely rounded up and relocated by the government. In the latest attack on these iconic animals, Nevada legislators proposed a bill which sought to deny them the right of access to water.

Responding to a firestorm of public outrage, including a Change.org petition from Friends of Animals, the Senate Natural Resources Committee chose not to take action on the bill without further study. In the May 20, 2011 meeting, Chairman Mark Manendo read a prepared statement to the Committee, citing numerous problems, including potential for litigation, lack of need for such a bill, and a poor public image of the state, should the bill pass.

Friends of Animals thanked supporters for the thousands of emails, letters, and phone calls that were made on behalf of the wild horses and burros.

A new bill currently sitting in the Nevada Senate, AB 329, aims to strip wild horses and burros of their federal protections under the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act by removing them from the definition of "wildlife" and denying them their basic rights to water.

Nevada's horses already face cruel helicopter roundups, sterilization and slaughter. If AB 329 passes, these animals would no longer be entitled to water on public lands.

AB 329 is largely supported by cattle ranchers who want nothing more than to force wild horses and burros off public lands in order to maximize their own profits.

Tell the Nevada Senate Natural Resources Committee not to discriminate against wild horses and burros. Tell them they are just like any other animal and shouldn't be denied water. Sign the petition today to oppose AB 329.

This is being voted on today. As Madeleine Pickens aptly noted, "they are trying to make wild horses less important than a crustacean or a beetle! We really need to let the state of Nevada know that the America people don’t believe that to be true and won’t sit by and permit this happen."

Nevada lawmakers have introduced a bill that would remove protections for wild horses and make it legal to withhold water from them. What's even more shocking is that it's already passed in the House and now sits in the Senate for the final vote.

The money that this bill will cost NEV in lost tourism and bad press - especially with Social Media streamlining, could be used to manage the horses, not killing them slowly and inhumanely by depriving them of water. This bill is hard to believe coming from a state that sports wild horses symbolizing the wild west, on their State Quarter?

Why would they counter the efforts of the NV tourism bureau?, those folks do a fantastic job! on their website the wild horses are featured for sightseeing and it states "One of the most enduring symbols of the American West is the wild horse. So it seems only fitting that half of the wild horses and burros in our country live on Nevada rangelands.""the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act was enacted, requiring the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to PROTECT and manage these living symbols of the Old West." All Corporations get tax breaks, why can't these horses be funded by a tax break?

Have a heart. Water on public lands should be access to people or animals that need it.

This inhumane, barbaric treatment of these beautiful, innocent creatures must be stopped! None of their plight is of their fault, or wrongdoing!
