Support Durand Academy’s boarding school application

    2. Petition by

      United Kingdom

This petition calls on the South Downs National Parks Authority to approve Durand Academy’s boarding school planning application in West Sussex.

Durand Academy has a track record for delivering excellence in education, scoring in the top 1-2% nationally for the amount of progress children make from when they join, with pupils achieving significantly above national averages.

Durand’s proposals for a secondary boarding element at the St Cuthman’s site will provide its pupils with the opportunity to experience a rich and broad school education in West Sussex, at no cost to parents. Building on a site which has traditionally been used for educational use, children will receive extended days of focused teaching, learning, sporting and creative pursuits in the beautiful South Downs National Park, from Monday to Friday, before going home to London at the weekends to be with their families.

Durand's proposal symbolises exactly what the National Parks are all about; opening up opportunities for people of all backgrounds, and sharing this beautiful space with people from all over the country.

Please join me in showing your support for Durand Academy’s planning application and calling on the South Downs National Parks Authority to approve it.

We want to get 1,500 signatures for this petition and will present it to the Authority before the Planning Committee meeting, where Durand's application will be judged.  Please encourage your family and friends to sign too.

The deadline is the end of November 2013 - please act fast!

Durand has been working tirelessly on its plans for an Upper School and, following further feedback from the SDNPA this summer, submitted an amended planning application in October.

Last week, Durand held a public meeting at Lodsworth Village Hall in West Sussex. The meeting was attended by around 120 people, who heard from Executive Head Sir Greg Martin about the changes the school has made to its planning application in response to feedback from the local community. It was a lively discussion, and several local people speak out in favour of the plans.
The amended application is now with the SDNPA who are engaging with consultees to seek their views before the application is brought to the planning committee in mid-December.

Please keep encouraging your family and friends to sign this petition – we will be presenting it to the Authority at the beginning of December and want to meet a target of 1,500 signatures!

      Thank you!

    3. Update on Durand's planning application

Below is an update from Durand:

Thank you to everyone for your continued support. As you know, Durand’s planning application was due to go before the South Downs National Parks Authority (SDNPA) planning committee on 11th July. However, working closely with the SDNPA officers as we approached this date, it became clear that certain aspects of our application still needed further work to satisfy planning officers and stand the best chance of approval. So we decided to pause and take the opportunity to further amend our application.

We have not yet confirmed a new planning committee date, but are aiming to submit the amended plans as soon as possible.

Our Middle School students are already flourishing in Stockwell, and we have no doubt that our broad curriculum and extended school days at the boarding school in the beautiful National Park, will enable every child to fulfil their potential and give back to society in a way that will make us all proud.

      Thank you again.
