Though we are consistently ranked among the top five programs in the nation for Advanced Practice Clinicians--including Midwifery/Women's Health, Adult, Family, Pediatric, Geriatric, Psychiatric, and Community/International Health--budget cuts have threatened our existence. While no elimination of programs is yet guaranteed, the future of our programs hangs in the balance.
UCSF's mission states, "As a public university, UCSF has a particular responsibility to ensure that it contributes to the public good and is an exemplar of civic responsibility. Striving to eliminate health disparities is one important part of this social responsibility."
Many of us have left successful careers, have families to support, and have made major life changes to join this program. We are dedicated to serving the underserved, though they are the communities who will suffer most if our CNS/NP programs are shut down. Advanced practice clinicians are prime candidates for serving under-resourced communities here and abroad, and have been proven to provide excellent outcomes, as well as reducing the burden on the healthcare system. To close our MSN programs would be a disservice to the mission at UCSF, and contribute to increased marginalization of already-vulnerable populations.
