Save the Master's Programs in Nursing at UCSF!

Though we are consistently ranked among the top five programs in the nation for Advanced Practice Clinicians--including Midwifery/Women's Health, Adult, Family, Pediatric, Geriatric, Psychiatric, and Community/International Health--budget cuts have threatened our existence. While no elimination of programs is yet guaranteed, the future of our programs hangs in the balance.

UCSF's mission states, "As a public university, UCSF has a particular responsibility to ensure that it contributes to the public good and is an exemplar of civic responsibility. Striving to eliminate health disparities is one important part of this social responsibility."

Many of us have left successful careers, have families to support, and have made major life changes to join this program. We are dedicated to serving the underserved, though they are the communities who will suffer most if our CNS/NP programs are shut down. Advanced practice clinicians are prime candidates for serving under-resourced communities here and abroad, and have been proven to provide excellent outcomes, as well as reducing the burden on the healthcare system. To close our MSN programs would be a disservice to the mission at UCSF, and contribute to increased marginalization of already-vulnerable populations.

Please sign to express your support for the UCSF School of Nursing Master's Specialites, and your commitment to serving the underserved.

Thank you.

      Hi all,

Just wanted to clarify a few questions--as noted in the petition, no cuts are yet guaranteed to programs, but rumors are swirling. Since the current MEPN class entered in June 2011, two specialties have already been eliminated. While we understand that this is an ongoing process, there is still concern that our programs will change altogether, and impact the communities we seek to serve. The purpose of this petition is simply to raise awareness. While we have the utmost faith in the value of our programs, we hope that the administrators at UC understand how important the programs are to local and global communities.

Thank you again for your support,
      Lauren

I believe in nurse-midwifery as a preferred method of maternal child healthcare. I also want to join the UCSF MEPN CNM track in 2014 to become a CNM by 2017. Please do not eliminate this excellent program.
